Northampton School for Boys offers up to 10% of places to boys (year 7 admission number is 215) with a particular aptitude in Music and Technology (can be one or both of these specialisms) in approximately equal numbers.
Whilst no previous experience is required in order to take the test, it is expected that applicants wishing to apply under this criterion have a keen interest in music and would wish to make the most of the opportunities available in this area should they gain a place at the school.
Stage 1: The test consists of four different sections looking at Pitch (10 marks), Melody (40 marks), Improvisation (10 marks) and Rhythm (40 marks). The test will last between 5 and 10 minutes and students are assessed individually by a qualified Music teacher. Students will be tested for their musical potential, it is not a test of musical attainment.
Stage 2: Each applicant will receive an aggregate score up to a maximum of 40. Applicants will be ranked according to their score and the 4 applicants with the highest ranking scores will be offered a music place.
